For this week we looked at solutions for our advocacy project. I specifically looked at solutions for puppy mills and so much of it consisted of the same formula… that there needs to be better enforcement of laws such as the Animal Welfare act or create new laws that give harsher fines and sentences for people that conduct this type of abuse and negligence towards their puppies. Some also took the route of focusing on how we can do more to help and many such as the US humane society and SPCA suggested to help out our local animal shelters with donations and adopting one of the many dogs in the shelters that need homes. They also encouraged continuous advocacy and spreading the word about the realities and dangers of puppy mills, to continue to be their voices. Many I found through simple google searches and going back to platforms I already knew such as the humane society and SCAP but I had to dig deeper into google scholar to find primarily legal journals surrounding the creation and further enforcement of animal welfare laws to regulate puppy mills.

On twitter I was also able to look at other classmates tweets about the solution to their issues as well. My favorite one I saw was from Aanchal Patel with her tweet about her counter argument regarding the possible ethical complexities that come along with faux fur even if it is more ethical than real fur that foxes are hunted for. This is something I never knew or would have though of which made me more interested in what more information she had about foxes.

My favorite tweet that I made was simple and described how adoption or supporting your local animal shelters was one of the most accessible ways to fight against puppy mills. The reason why I chose this tweet of mine is because I included a picture of the San Diego Humane Society which is where I’ve gotten the chance to volunteer and see so many loving pups.

This blog and everything else I do in this class is in loving memory of my dog Mango, she was the sweetest and most patient of all girls and my favorite snuggle bug. Truly a girls best friend.
